Jolly Jumbuck Poll Merino Stud
ASBV’s, Non-Mulesed, Easy-Care

Jolly Jumbuck Poll Merino Stud was founded in 2006 by Felicity, Charlie and Lachie Brumpton after seeing a growing demand in Queensland for poll Merino sheep together with a passion for sheep breeding. It all started by the purchase of 120 stud ewes from Moorundie Park, SA that were artificialy inseminated to Moorundie Park and Willemenup, WA, rams. Following on, the Jolly Jumbuck Poll Merino Stud was registered in 2007, Flock No. 1363.

Our primary focus is to breed a modern, early maturing, easy-care and dual-purpose poll Merino to suit all environments, in particular the high summer rainfall and harsh climate that Queensland provides. Therefore, we put a lot of emphasis on producing very white, soft-handling and nourished wool that is both fleece-rot and fly resistant. This along with a focus on producing plain bodies with the right skin type has allowed us to cease mulesing and follow the demands of our modern market.

The use of both objective and subjective measurement is important in the breeding decisions made to achieve our breeding objectives. Raw data, ASBV’s and DNA testing are all tools used in balance, combined with visual assessment when classing and selecting our sheep to ensure that we head in a forward direction and meet our clients needs. The stud currently consists of 800 breeding ewes and is continuing to grow each year as the demand for our rams becomes greater.

We continue to benchmark our sheep each year by attending state and interstate sheep shows where we can identify trends in the industry and compare our sheep against the national flock. This allows us to find traits that we need to focus on or change so that we continue to advance the modern Merino and remain a leader in the Australian sheep industry with our genetics. In doing so, our genetics are always competitive at each event as we and our clients continue to win awards at both state and interstate levels.
